ClaveKazi Student Group - Washington DC - The ClaveKazi Dance Company welcome students that want to improve on their skills through intensive training in Mambo. Students are given 3-4 months to learn a complete dance routine that involves partnerwork, footwork, transitions, and spinning. Shaka Brown has choreographed 10 performances for the ClaveKazi Student Groups, which have been performed throughout the DC area, Philadelphia, New York and more. Each group presents a different challenge, as dancer's levels vary from new intermediates to high advanced, however the proof of their satisfaction is that many dancers continue to learn multiple choregraphies, and some to even create their own dance companies, or progress to the ClaveKazi Professional Dance Company. ClaveKazi Professional Dance Company - Shaka Brown has acted as the principal choreographer of the ClaveKazi Dance Company since it's inception in 2002. Over 10 different innovative choreographies have been presented in that time, with themes ranging from classic Mambo to acrobatic Martial Arts - Salsa fusions, powerful Open Footwork routines, and even quirky Cha-Cha-Cha numbers. Shaka Brown has contributed to ClaveKazi's reputation as a premier latin dance company, and continues to choreograph numbers that have been performed throughout Europe, Asia, South America and North America.
ClaveKazi Japan - When Jonathan Shimokado and Hana Akamine, directors of "Extreme-Salsa", wanted to create a model for building Mambo dancers in Tokyo, Japan, they turned to Shaka Brown. Shaka created 3 choreographies for their training teams, submitted via video which they then used to teach the ClaveKazi methodology. Shaka then followed up with individual trips to Tokyo to fine tune their technique before the debut performance. The result? ClaveKazi Japan has produced over 20 top notch dancers who have traveled throughout Japan to perform, and even to perform before audiences in the USA.
EDSAE - Lisbon, Portugal - Shaka Brown was honored to be a guest instructor at the Edsae school. During an extended stay in Lisbon he was able to choreograph for their "Estudio Coreografico" class, alongside Georgia LeCroix. This group performed their first Mambo routine to a medley of music from Eddie Palmieri (Billie), Frankie Dante Y Su Flamboyan (Venceremos), and Angel Canales (Bomba Carabomba). A mix of comedy, open footwork, ladies styling, and fast partnerwork kept the students and audience entertained for 2 lively performances. Additionally Shaka Brown was tasked with choreographing the holiday performance of all Edsae instructors. In keeping with the holiday theme, the work included a comedic opening followed by a Cha-Cha-Cha which led into a Salsa performance. Music: Ralph Robles' "Val's Candy" was used.
Collaborations - Shaka Brown specializes in collaboration routines, and looks for opportunities to work with top named artists in short term works, often preparing performances for delivery the following day, or even the same night! There is a great energy shared when artists are able to release raw energy on the stage. Some of the most memorable collaborations have included the following: Nina - Joe Cuba (Cheo Feliciano) - Boston Congress The Darkness - Atlanta Flava Invasion, 2007 Washington DC Salsa Congress. Music: Willie Colon "The Hustler" Saneleo's Surprise - 2007 Curacao Salsa Tour. Music: Frankie Dante "Chupa el Piruli" Switch Party - 2008 Curacao Salsa Tour. Music: Ralph Robles "Val's Candy"
