If you have to ask, then yes it probably does. But don’t worry, here are 5 important steps you can take to improve your dance performance. Why do I give this information away? Basically, I’m tired of seeing performances that could be a lot better, if everyone would take the following rules and apply them. Here we go…

1. Music

Choose the Right Music!

There are thousands of songs that are available for creating a performance to. However, when it comes to most shows, it seems that 75% of the routines that are out there choose from a selection of about 30 songs. Choose a song that isn’t in this list and you are already taking the big step towards creating a performance worthy of the stage.

In choosing a song, however, the litmus test of “Have I seen anyone else perform to this song?” will not always work. There are some songs out there that haven’t been performed to for a reason. They don’t work. Maybe they are too slow. Maybe they aren’t dynamic enough. One of the most important things to note is:

A song that is great to social dance to is not necessarily one that is great to perform to.

(For the aspiring DJs, the reverse is also true. Not all performance songs work on the dance floor. )

Once you have selected your song, now comes the next step. Cut it.

Most Salsa performances are too long. Television commercials used to be longer than a minute. Then they shortened to 30 seconds. Then 15 seconds. Nowadays the commercials we see online range somewhere between 5 and 15 seconds. When searching for something on youtube (example-“How to remove the kitchen faucet”) do you want the 2 minute video or the 8 minute video? Chances are that you will click the 2 minute video first. If there’s a video labeled “How to remove your kitchen faucet in 30 seconds”, then you will click that one. With that in mind, your 4:45 Salsa performance is probably about 2:30 too long. I recommend the following as a general guideline in planning your performance length:

How long should my Salsa Performance be?

Solo – 1 :00-2:00

One Couple – 2:00-3:00

More than One Couple – 3:00-4:00

There are always exceptions to the rule, but this can give you a good idea of what the audience’s attention span will tolerate. Take “So You Think You Can Dance!” as an example. Each performance lasts roughly 1:30. The solos are 30 seconds long. The full company pieces might push 2:30. It’s not a matter of how long you can dance. It’s a matter of how long people will be interested in watching you dance. So take the hot 4:45 song that you have and cut it. Not trim, CUT. It may be hard, you may feel that you aren’t doing it justice, that you are insulting the musicians, etc. Don’t worry, you will get over it and once it’s cut it will be a lot easier to put a hot choreography together that leaves the audience wanting more. Now that you have the song down to a reasonable length, you’ve put the show together, and you want to make it stage worthy, let’s take a look at your presentation.

Shaka & Luz Perform “Breakdown”

2. Costume

I’ve seen performances that had the potential to be great ruined by poor costume choices. I’ve also seen performances that would have been mediocre, but managed to salvage some respect because of a hot costume. There’s so much that goes into your costume selection, it cannot be an afterthought. For the most part, your costume will be the first thing people see, usually before you even start dancing.Your costume will determine whether you are a professional dancer. Your costume will sell your show. Promoters look for pictures of you in a hot outfit, doing some dramatic pose, because thats what sells tickets. Here’s some simple rules when it comes to putting together your performance costume:

A. No Jeans. “What about black jeans?” – No. ” What about white jeans?” No. “What about fashionable jeans?” No. Cut-off jeans, Black jeans, blue jeans, tight jeans, loose jeans, women in jeans, men in jeans. If it can be described using the word “jeans” or “denim”, then it cannot be paired with “Latin Performance Costume”

Choose the Right Rhinestones

B. One word- BLING! When it comes to rhinestones it’s never enough. So you’re placing the order for rhinestones, and they ask you how many gross you want. One gross is 12 dozen (144 pieces). You may be thinking “One HUNDRED and FORTY FOUR! That’s WAY more than enough!” If you put 144 stones on a shirt, it will look very sad. People will look at you backstage and ask if your stones fell off in the wash. Multiply that number by 10 and you might be getting closer to a good looking shirt. If you are planning to stone a dress, multiply that number by 20, and then match it with sequins, fringe, appliqués, and glitter. Now you are going in the right direction. I have never seen an outfit that was too sparkly, so don’t be afraid that you will overdo it. In selecting your stones, don’t get the cheap plastic stones from your local craft store! Go for Swarovski Crystal flat back stones. You can order from www.rhinestones.com, give yourself about a week of sitting in a quiet place and glueing on rhinestones. It’s tedious. But when the lights come on and you look like you are wearing a suit of armor, it’s worth it.

update – As an alternative to swarovski stones, you can order Czech Preciosa crystals – cheaper, harder, and sparklier. Rhinestoneguy.com Thanks for the tip Irene!

Fishnet Stockings. Yes you need them.

C. Ladies, wear fishnet performance stockings. – There are a few manufacturers of quality dance fishnets. Capezio & Danskin are the industry leaders. Find your size, and appropriate color. If any part of your legs are going to be exposed, they need to be in fishnets. When they are not in fishnets the audience will be spending more time looking at your legs wondering why they aren’t in fishnets than they will spend watching your performance. If it’s a hot show they will say “That was a good show, why didn’t she wear fishnets?!” If the show sucks they will say “Well I figured it was going to suck, she wasn’t even wearing the right tights.”

You will find these fishnets at your local dance supply shop, or online. Of course it’s usually cheaper online, once you know your size. You will probably not find them at the mall, drugstore, or halloween costume supply. You may find fishnets, but finding the proper dance fishnets is unlikely. There is a difference. Do not go on stage bare legged, and do not go on stage wearing nylon pantyhose. No matter how beautiful and toned your legs are, it will look like a hot mess. Make the proper investment, and you will be more confident on stage. Get an extra pair, they are durable, but of course Murphy’s law applies when it comes to rips and runs. Be prepared.

Proper Mens Performance Shirt. Attached to shorts. Does not come untucked.

D. Gentlemen

Shirt – A well designed shirt will button between your legs, or be attached to a pair of shorts. It’s like a onesie. This shirt cannot come untucked during your performance. If you must wear a “regular” shirt, then use a shirt garter to keep the shirt in. Few things are more distracting than an outfit coming apart during the performance.

Pants- Invest in a pair of proper ballroom pants/slacks/trousers. They will cost you between $75 and $300, and once you put the right pair on, you will instantly look and feel like a better dancer. They generally have no pockets, no belt loops, and they will have a permanent crease in the front and back. They are wrinkle free. They will come up slightly above your belly button, helping you to look trimmer, while keeping your shirt properly tucked in. Some come with foot elastics that keep the pant legs from rising up.

Socks – Wear Socks that match your pants. There will inevitably come a time where you forget to pack the proper socks. To avoid this, I usually keep the socks inside of the shoes that I’m going to wear for the performance. Or better yet, pin the socks to the inside of the pants.

Now, if you find yourself performing in pants that are not proper, at least take the following precautions:

Have NOTHING in your pockets. Not a cell phone, not a wallet, not your house keys, car keys, lip balm, etc. Make sure that your pockets are completely empty. Cut the pockets out so that you don’t have the fabric showing beneath the pant leg. Seal the pockets if you can, with a needle and thread so that you don’t want to have your pocket liner flip out while performing, and you can also avoid getting a finger caught in the pocket while dancing.

Maria Ramos, international instructor and performer offers this tidbit regarding your presentation:

Hair and makeup need to be taken seriously. Men & Women can reduce the shine on their face with powder. If your hair is supposed to be up, make sure that it stays up and in place. Gel, hair spray, mouse, bobby pins, all of the above. Get it right, get it tight!

Record and Review Every Session

3. Video Review

So now you are working on the show, and you think it’s ready. Have you been recording and watching the performance as it develops? Or are you going to wait until the first time you perform before you get to see yourself through the eyes of the camera? Few things will be more helpful than looking at yourself on video. For multiple couples, video will let you know where things are in sync (or not). After you watch the performance the first few times, go back and watch it in SLOW MOTION. That’s right, slow it down to 75% and you will see all of the things that you were missing out on.

Once you have the video performance looking the way that you want, it’s time to take that same video and play it for someone that doesn’t understand how much work it takes. It could be your mother, coworker, neighbor, etc. Is there any part of the video that you have to say:

“Don’t pay attention to this part, we are going to fill it in with…”

Then it’s not ready yet. Your performance is not ready if there is any point in the show that is ambiguous, from entrance to exit.

Peer Review. It’s important!

4. Peer Review

This is probably the most humbling phase of developing a performance. Show it to your peers. The people that you will ultimately be backstage performing before or after. Ask for their honest opinions and suggestions. How you ask for their thoughts is important, as most people are not comfortable giving critiques. So if you say:

“Did you like it?”

They will probably say “Yeah, nice song, good job!” But they will avoid saying something that could upset you. Open up the discussion with something like:

“This is a new show that I’m working on. It’s going to take some work to get it where I’d like it to be. I respect your opinion, can you help me with some suggestions on how I can improve it?”

Once you find someone that gives you their honest feedback, thank them for it and take it into consideration. Try not to get defensive, sometimes their advice can be harsh. Toughen up and be happy that they are saying it to your face, as other people will be saying it behind your back anyway.

Professional coaching makes a huge difference!

5. Professional Coaching

So you have done all of the above, and you still haven’t gotten your show to the point that it needs to be? Don’t worry, there are professionals out there who can make it their job to clean you up. You will be surprised at how much they can point out, inside of an hour, that will increase your presentation level tremendously. It’s not cheap, but how much is your show worth to you? Rehearsal time, studio rental, costume design, travel expenses, everything adds up to an investment of thousands of dollars for every show that you want to bring to light. If you can make a significant difference by spending another few hundred dollars, then I suggest you do it.

A professional coach will have experience in producing performances that audiences love. Whether you are preparing your performance for competition or exhibition, they will have the eye to get you where you want to be.

Before your first meeting with a professional coach, you should have sent them a video copy of your performance, in costume, done to the best of your ability. This will give them an idea of what you can already do, so that when you first meet they will have things in mind.

I spoke with Darlin Garcia, multiple medal winner, performer, and instructor, based in Philadelphia, PA. When asked what makes the difference between a strong performance and a mediocre one he simply stated:

Darlin Garcia – Art In Motion

Practice, practice, practice till you know it with your eyes closed, with and without a partner. Have confidence in yourself. Believing that you are on stage for a reason is everything. Many people work so hard to get to a semi pro or pro level as students. Then once they get there they think they have arrived, and dont need to put in as much work.

In summary:

1.
